CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Hundreds of purses were auctioned off Thursday night to support a good cause.
United Way of Champaign County held its fifth annual “Power of the Purse” event. It’s a fundraiser all about women empowering other women. The money goes to pay for scholarships at Parkland College and an emergency shelter for families. More than 400 women came out to show their support.
In the past five years, they’ve raised more than $350,000. This year’s total was $100,208.
The Emergency Shelter for Families at Maple Grove has helped 130 families since it opened in 2016.
28 Parkland College scholarships have been given out.
