CHAMPAIGN, Ill (WCIA)–It’s something many of you have been asking for for years, and now it’s one step closer to happening.
We reported a few weeks ago the old Bergners location at market place mall in Champaign would be demolished.
Now we know what could be going in, a Costco.
There are already 2,500 Costco members within just an hour drive-time of champaign.
That makes this a great area for a new location.
This Costco wouldn’t be attached to the mall but would be right next to it.
City leaders really want this to happen because it helps fill an empty space, but it won’t be Directly attached to the mall.
Part of the mall next to the old Bergners location would also be demolished to make room for Costco, which would come with its own gas station.
“For the city, I think it’s much more attractive proposal to have the store next to the mall. It really is beneficial in two ways: First of all, it provides a new store that many have residents have been asking for many years. And second, locating the store directly next to the mall should be a benefit to the mall because it’s a huge customer-generator,” Rob Kowalski.
The spot by the mall does cost a little bit more for Costco to fill.
The way the city is helping with that is by reimbursing $2.75 of sales tax revenue back to Costco.
They are projected to generate seven-point-one million during their first six years of business.
Champaign’s City Council will have a study session next week to consider the sales tax agreement with Costco.
If Costco is approved for that location, it’s expected to open by spring 2020.
If approved, this Costco is expected to hire around 150 to 225 people. The starting rate for a cashier is 14 dollars an hour.
Those employees also have access to healthcare benefits.
