CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — If you drive down Neil Street, you might wonder why there are cardboard boxes lining the sidewalk. It’s part of One Winter Night, to raise awareness for homelessness.

C-U at Home invited people to spend the night outside to see what it’s like to be without a warm bed and roof over your head. About 250 people are calling these home for the night.

Each person has a goal of raising $1,000 or more. The money supports Phoenix, a warm place for the homeless to stay during the day. C-U at Home does homeless outreach programs.

One Winter’s Night is literally a chance to feel what it’s like to be homeless for a night. People have pledge to sleep on the street until 6 am, Saturday.

Chris Tome brought his whole family to emphasize the importance of appreciating what one has. With the windchill, the temperature will be about 5-degrees.
