DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — Expect more construction at Nelson Park this summer. The city is one step closer to getting a new multi-million dollar water park.
Wednesday, the Decatur Park District approved contracts for the Overlook Aquatic Center.
Park district leaders say it means a lot more than just another place to cool off this summer. While construction is happening, it means more jobs.
The water park will also hopefully mean another destination spot for tourists. The water park will be next to Overlook Adventure Park. It’s expected to cost about $3.5 million.
Now that contracts have been approved, construction is expected to start this month. It’s expected to be completed by Memorial Day, 2019.
In addition to the water park, the park district is also starting construction on an amphitheater, soccer field and a project connecting Scovill Zoo to the Children’s Museum of Illinois.
