Parents air graduation concerns

RANTOUL, Ill. (WCIA) — Some people are worried they may not be able to make it to their kid’s graduation because of a decision the school district made.

Thursday night, concerns were shared with the school board regarding their new time of the promotional ceremony. Earlier this year, Rantoul School District reinstated their 8th grade graduation at J.W Eater after it was canceled six years ago. The board members at the time said they over-stepped their boundaries by shutting it down.

It used to be held on a Thursday night. This year, it’s scheduled at 9 a.m. on a Friday. “They have to work. They can’t just take off because many of them aren’t business owners, so they can’t just take off and come to it. If they do, what happens with their job,” said Wendell Golston. 318 people signed a petition this week saying they would prefer an evening event. No word yet if the school board will consider changing the date and time.
