Parent moving after school violence

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — After months of fights at the middle and high school, one family says they’re moving because of it.

Last week, the Urbana School District said there were 5 fights at the middle and high school, resulting in two teachers getting hurt and several students being suspended. It all comes after the district started a new disciplinary system, which focuses on restorative practices and eliminated several dean positions.

Urbana mom Nicole Willis says she doesn’t think the new system is working. She says her 7th grade son sees fights weekly, and has even been pushed into a locker. For his safety, the family says they’re moving out of the district. They hope to relocate before next school year.

The district declined to comment but says they’re doing everything in their power to give students a safe, supportive environment.
