Owner says was “right time” to sell Kams

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — It’s the end of an era for UI campus bar. Kams officially has new owners, but it doesn’t mean it’s going away just yet.

So many students go to Kams, it has so many traditions; at least 27-years worth. That’s how long the previous owner, Eric Meyer, ran the bar.

Meyer says the original building’s owners were the Kamers, hence the name Kams. He signed on as a partner of the bar in the 90s, ultimately buying the entire thing a decade later.

His last day was Wednesday. While he says he’s sad, he and his family will always have great memories there. He says he’s been thinking about this for at least five years now, and this was the right time for him.

He said he’s been talking with the new owners and he believes they’ll keep the traditions “as is” at least for a little while. He’s employed a lot of people there, family members, famous athletes and more.

Meyer isn’t fully retired yet. He has his hands in both Pia’s and Bentley’s.
