TUSCOLA, Ill. (WCIA) — There’s a special room in the Douglas County Courthouse dedicated to war memorabilia.
The Grand Army of the Republic, or GAR room has been around since the Courthouse was built in the early 1900s.
A GAR group used it until the 1930s, and several other groups met there after that.
Now, a Sons of Union Veterans group meets there on the third Tuesday of the month, at 2 pm. They’re always looking for new members. Dana Hales’ great-grandfather fought for the Union during the Civil War.
“It’s interesting. We sometimes have guest speakers, we have demonstrations, we have group discussions amongst ourselves on Civil War battles, equipment, battles, etc.,” says Hales.
The GAR Room is also open to the public when the courthouse is open.
