TUSCOLA, Ill. (WCIA) — Firefighting is a family affair in one department. There are three father-son duos on the force, and a pair of brothers.
Chip Haake has been with the Tuscola Fire Department for 26 years. He’s now the Assistant Fire Chief. His son, Dustin, joined just over a year ago.
“It’s absolutely amazing. He is a joy to work with. He really wanted to get into the fire service at a young age,” says Chip.
All of the time that Chip spent at the firehouse helped shape Dustin’s future.
“I love my community, I love the town and protecting it and just seeing the enjoyment my dad got out of it after all those years. It was something I wanted to do,” says Dustin. Dustin says he’s used to working side-by-side with his dad. Chip was his coach growing up, and Dustin says that carries over to today.
“I think we work really well together because I know exactly what he’s thinking, what he’s doing. Both as a father and on the fire ground.”
And because there are so many families on one force, Chip says the team is unlike any other.
“This family looks out for each other, we take care of each other. We celebrate together, we cry together, we have great times together,” he says.
The Our Town Tuscola celebration will be Friday, August 17. Our coverage starts live during the Morning Show and continues with CI Living at 4, and during our 5 and 6 p.m. newscasts.
