COVINGTON, Ind. (WCIA) — A multi-purpose trail is giving Our Town a place to exercise and explore nature.

Circle Trail was started by a couple who wanted to encourage others to go out and get some fresh air. There’s also a meaning behind the name.

Every few years, another mile is added, all with the help of generous community support. The plan is to eventually circle all of town.

It would’ve taken awhile to check out Circle Trail on foot, so it’s easier to do so from a golf cart’s view. The trail started in 2004. Two years later, it was opened to the public.

“The trail is 5.2 miles and it’s a multi-purpose recreation trail so you can bring your bicycles, skateboards, roller blades, walk, jog, bike.”

Dale White is with the Covington Community Foundation. The trail was a project it helped fund, thanks to the generosity of Ernie and Anne Johannes.

“The founding executive director of the community foundation had retired from his career and he and his wife were travelers and they hadn’t eaten healthy during their careers and they began traveling and going on trails.”

Raquel Stultz not only is an avid trail user herself, she’s also a trail ambassador.

“Our job for that is to make sure the trail doesn’t have any trash on the trail because, when you walk in the trail, you take whatever you bring in with you out.”

Miles upon miles of nature for anyone to enjoy and, along the way, you’ll see several species of plants and trees.

“It’s a tree-lined trail in a lot of parts of it and actually circles Covington.”

Some days, it’s a place for some to walk their dogs. Other times, it’s a track for a race, but Stultz says it’s great to see the benefits it brings to Our Town.

“I love the trail, knowing the kids are safe and they’re able to ride a bike and a know that they don’t have to worry about the streets and the busy cars going by.”

The Covington 5K is Saturday. All the proceeds will go towards community projects.
