SULLIVAN, Ill. (WCIA) — Our Town’s fire station has something most don’t have. Crews aren’t riding around in a typical red fire engine. Here, they’re blue.

There are two theories why.

Chief Michael Piper says, “One theory is we had a trustee that was color blind and when he saw red it looked blue so they just chose to make the trucks blue another theory is they just chose blue honestly, I don’t know and there’s nobody around today that could tell us.”

A former captain with the department says the story he heard involved a chief from 1957 buying the blue trucks because when he went to pick them out, the Navy’s blue trucks were there and he thought they’d be a nice addition.

Regardless, the department is known as the House of Blues.
