Our Town booming with expansion

MAHOMET, Ill. (WCIA) — Our Town has had a population explosion of sorts. So, why does everyone want to live here? There has been more than just population growth. There’s also a boom in business.

People here can’t imagine living anywhere else. They say, from the schools to the parks, Our Town has it all.

“I like Mahomet ’cause it’s a great, quiet community.”

“Once people come out here and see our community, they’re like, ‘I don’t need to leave. It’s perfect.'”

The village slogan is Preserving the Past – Building the Future. Houses are being built; businesses are opening up shop and population numbers continue climbing.

“For each of the last four decades, the population has seen over 50-percent growth every decade and in the last few years since 2010.”

Village administrator Patrick Brown says they believe there are a few reasons why.

“It’s a great place to live, great schools, great outdoor recreation. You can also tell by all the construction taking place. We see a lot of interest in changes in the last fwe years is commercial growth. We have new developments on Main Street called West Park Town Center. They have seven areas for lease at that complex. We have new growth on Church Hill Crossing, out on US 150 East.”

The Chamber of Commerce is also seeing steady growth.

“In April of 2017, we had about 123 members and we’re sitting at 234 today, so almost doubled.”

Director Walter Pierce says there is a lot of opportunity here and he’s excited to see what the future can bring.

“The community is a very tight knit community. We support our local businesses.”

Another plan to attract businesses is use the former Sangamon Elementary school. I’m told it will be turned into an incubator and several companies would operate out of it.
