CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — There’s a new way to dispose of old prescription medication.
OSF is placing a disposal box in its lobbies. It’s a way for people to get rid of expired and unnecessary medicines in a safe way.
The CDC says the US is experiencing an epidemic of drug overdoses with a 137% increase since 2000.
OSF’s pharmacy director says he believes this is the first option for people in Danville. This way, drugs don’t wind up in the groundwater or in the hands of people they’re not prescribed for.
The containers are locked and monitored while the facility is open. Anyone can use them, however, they’re just for pills. Needles, liquids, inhalers and thermometers are prohibited.
The special disposal boxes are available in main entrance lobbies, available from 6 am – 8 pm, in Urbana, and 6 am – 8:30 pm, in Danville.
