DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — Loved ones are trying to cope after a young father was murdered.

The family of 21-year old Adrian Chatman says they want answers. He was shot and killed Tuesday, in the 800-block of West Decatur Street.

“What am I going to tell my nieces? What am I going to tell my son?”

It’s been more than a day since Adrian Chatman was killed and it’s something his older sister says she still can’t bring herself to do.

“How am I going to explain to them that we don’t even know what happened?”

They don’t have any answers. Police haven’t made any arrests in connection to Chatman’s murder. He was shot Tuesday, just after midnight.

“It don’t feel real. It’s a nightmare, someone brutally murdered my brother.”

Loved ones say losing Chatman is painful and they’ll never forget him.

“I know he’s going to live through us ’cause his spirit was to die for. He was energetic, happy, never a dull moment.”

A brother, friend and father. They say there was no reason for this act.

“He was the best father you could ask for.”

Right now, family is focusing on prayer. His sudden death sent a shockwave through the community and they’re fed up with the violence.

“We’re supposed to stick together, put down the gun, stop the violence. It does nothing but kill.”

“Somebody knows something. He was not by himself and I just want them to know they took somebody so precious from a lot of people.”

Chatman’s family set up a GoFundMe page to pay for funeral expenses. They’re holding a vigil Thursday evening at Garfield Park. They’re welcoming other victims of violence to join.

They say, as a community, it’s time to come together and put an end to this. This is the fifth murder in the city this year.

FBI statistics show violent crime has grown in Central Illinois cities of Springfield (3%), Danville (11%), Decatur (3%) and Champaign-Urbana (7%), between 2015 – 2016. Violent crime includes murder, rape, robbery and kidnapping.
