Officials still assessing damage at downtown fire scene

Local News

MATTOON, Ill. (WCIA) — Businesses next to a building that caught fire downtown this week say they’re waiting to see when it’ll be safe to open.

The Mattoon Fire Department says the city will be bringing in more experts monday to assess the damage at Shores Jewelry. They’ve told business owners the decision on whether they’ll have to tear the building down is expected this week.

Luigi’s restaurant’s owner says their building has water and smoke damage. He says they’re heartbroken but understanding.

They’re not sure exactly when they’ll be able to reopen, but they’ve gotten a “tremendous” amount of calls and want to thank everyone for the support.
