TOLEDO, Ill. (WCIA) — Community relationships are a big part of the YMCA’s philosophy and now they’re bringing that to Cumberland County with a brand new $4 million facility.
The Mattoon YMCA is expanding its services into Toledo with the “Neal Center.” This area doesn’t have something like this.
Burnham Neal, who’s family founded Neal Tire and Auto Service, wanted to build a recreation center in the area for years. He died in 2012 and this new YMCA will be part of his legacy.
Neal donated money to build the gym at the Mattoon YMCA and his foundation donated the $4 million for this project. Now staff is helping bring services to the new place.
It’ll be a two-story, 33,000 square foot building with a pool, wellness center, fitness studios and a track. But it’s not just the nice facility that matters here; it’s the philosophy behind the YMCA they hope to bring into Toledo.
“I needed to find a community of people that I could work out with so I found that as soon as I came to the Y. Everyone is a family. Everyone greets you. You start coming to classes and become part of the group. People miss you when you are not there.”
Now that community is going to start in a new place. They plan to break ground by the end of the year and construction will take about a year to complete.
