CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) — There’s a little change coming which could mean a lot for parents. New buildings are now required to have changing tables in restrooms.
It doesn’t effect existing buildings. Some new buildings which will need to have the feature include restaurants, theaters, shopping malls and sports arenas.
For many parents, it’s an added convenience and less of a mess.
“Without those tables, people are changing their kids messy diapers on the floor, on the sink, on places that really aren’t very sanitary”
Now, the leaders are pushing to make the city more family-friendly.
“It’s going to require a standard safety-approved changing table.”
It seems like everyone is on the same page.
“A lot of families come around a lot of the restaurants here in Champaign, so I definitely do think it could be a good thing.”
Some restaurants are already ahead of the process.
“I have had guests say stuff to us that it’s nice we do have a changing table in both restrooms.”
Businesses which don’t already have changing tables in bathrooms aren’t required to install them, but the city does encourage them to.
“It’s a low cost, and it has a lot of benefits for Champaign.”
Catering to families is the main benefit.
“It makes it a lot easier for young mothers and grandparents.”
It’s something everyone can get on board with.
“Growing up, changing tables have always been kind of an option out there. It’s nice to see that they’re kind of being implemented more on a consistent standard for everybody.”
Structures with permits before June 1 aren’t included in this list. The city says if there isn’t space for a changing table in both restrooms, a separate room with a table would be an acceptable option.
