CHAMPAIGN, Ill (WCIA)–Homes are popping up on the Bristol Place property.
The houses that used to be there were torn down a couple of years ago to make room for redevelopment.
Now, construction is ramping up near Bradley and Market Streets in Champaign.
There will be 90 houses to be rented out.
Rent for 84 of those will be based on income and the other 6 will be rented at market rate.
Before this project, the neighborhood was run down with abandoned homes and some were falling apart.
City leaders say champaign needs more affordable housing.
“I think we’ve learned that when we blend in some subsidized housing and unsubsidized and some of different incomes. its good for everyone to have a mixture of people in different income strata to be neighbors together,” Tom Bruno says.
Construction started last fall and should be completed by the end of the year.
People should be able to move in as soon as next January.
