URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The fire department has a new truck equipped to handle the surroundings. The Urbana Fire Department, located on the UI campus, invested in $500,000 to make sure it was perfect.
Features on the truck include more compartments, so more places to put things. There’s also a hidden ladder in one of those compartments. When the ladder was on top, it would collect branches from trees.
While other firetrucks have carried hazmat, this truck has the storage space to carry a complete first response compliment.
It’s all stored at the top of the truck in the “coffin.” It’s called that because there’s a hard lid which flips up. It also makes it safe to walk on top.
The new truck will last 20-years; 15 on the front line and five as a resource.
It’s not the department’s first big purchase. Two years ago, the other fire department in Urbana also bought a brand new truck. It’s similar but has its own special features.
