Native American group on school mascot

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — One group is putting pressure on the NCAA in hopes the University will bring back the Chief.

The Native American Guardians Association met Sunday night to discuss the fighting Sioux’s support for Chief Illiniwek. They say the NCAA’s decision to bar the University from using the Chief as a symbol equates to “de facto genocide.” Chief Illiniwek was the symbol for UI from 1926 to 2007. The NCAA ruled in 2006 certain Native-American college mascots were hostile and abusive to minorities.
