NATIONAL (WCIA) — Email threats have caused evacuations and building sweeps across the country, including right here in Central Illinois.
The City of Urbana, Decatur Memorial Hospital and Decatur Manor Healthcare acknowledged investigations. The threats were sent by email Thursday afternoon.
The buildings were also cleared while authorities investigated. Urbana Police say there were two separate threats. The email didn’t specify any locations and were poorly written.
One email demanded money be transferred to a Bitcoin address to stop the bomb from going off. Authorities searched the building but didn’t find a suspicious package.
After Decatur Memorial got an email, leaders say they followed protocol. They got the police and fire department involved to investigate.
Between the hours of 1 and 3 p.m. on Thursday, three businesses in Champaign got two threats each. Police investigated the threats but found them not credible. No word on what those businesses are, but police say it is business as usual now.
