Update: 4:20 pm, 11/1/17, WednesdayDECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — Neighbors are disturbed to hear details about the latest crime to hit the area. Some are even afraid to live here.
Two men were found shot to death in a mobile home, in the 3100-block of North Kent Avenue, in the Park City Mobile Home community. Police are investigating it as a double homicide.
Authorities have several leads but no word on a suspect. Neighbors say it’s definitely not the first time there’s been violence in the area, but this latest incident makes them question their safety.
Ruth McLemore has called the neighborhood home for more than 20-years, but says lately it hasn’t felt like it.
“Our house has been robbed three times since we’ve been here.”
Aside from that, she says she’s constantly worried about people speeding down the road, dropping trash as they go. But, waking up to news of two people found shot to death is hard to take.
“I used to love the community. There is so much crime here now. It’s a scary place to be. It’s just really scary. You don’t go anywhere unless you have someone with you.”
McLemore says she has a lot more to worry about than just herself.
“Living right across the street is really fearful for me. I have a mentally handicapped sister that lives with me also. I have to be vigilant when she is out in the yard or everything because she will hug everybody.”
“Something needs to be done.”
Jane Goodrich also lives across the street and says she’s fed up.
“In our neighborhood, it’s too close, too close to us. The shooting and violence and everything needs to come to a stop.”
For her, it’s not a surprise, but she says it’s exactly what’s wrong.
“It’s too close to us, but it happens all the time anymore, everywhere.”
The coroner is withholding the victim’s names until families are notified.
