ILLINOIS (WCIA) — Drivers are going to see more people on the roads than usual this month.

IDOT is giving out grants so local law enforcement agencies can pay overtime to officers and keep them on the roads.

Those officers are looking for one thing: drivers who are texting or talking on cellphones while driving.

Sangamon County is one of those partnering with IDOT. Sheriff Jack Campbell says it’s not just young people who can’t keep off their phones.

Accidents caused by distracted drivers have dropped 9% since 2016, but Campbell says there are still too many drivers on the road using cellphones.
