swim for bug

MAHOMET, Ill. (WCIA)– As the weather warms up, families are taking a swim to escape the heat. One mother wants parents to keep safety in mind before the summer fun, so they don’t have to deal with the heartbreak she did.

Lisa Philbeck Berry’s daughter, Lainey, drowned in a pool about 10 years ago. Her nickname was Bug. Bug didn’t know how to swim. Berry wants to prevent this from happening to anyone else’s kids. Through her program, called “Swim for Bug”, parents can sign their kids up for swim lessons, for free. The event happened at Lake of the Woods. There was face painting, games, and food for sale. The money helps pay for those swim lessons and helps children learn pool safety.

Berry says this event is a way to educate families. This was the 5th year they had the event. Berry says she continues to do this each year because she feels like it’s making a difference.
