CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — There are more than a few roadblocks on campus. A project meant to make traveling smoother is causing congestion while it’s currently underway.
MCORE begins a new phase Monday. This part of the project is between Wright Street and Goodwin Avenue.
Whether you’re driving or walking, Champaign and Urbana public works departments say you should expect significant detours and delays. It’s going to affect a few major spots on campus.
Matthews will only run southbound from Springfield to Green. Only one side of Green Street sidewalks will be accessible.
Engineering Hall is part of the new phase, but drivers can still access both sides of the road there.
Finally, the Illini Union will be open during the phase, but the north circle drive and entrance will be closed. Drivers heading to the Union are asked to take Springfield and turn right on Matthews to get there.
Project leaders say, once it’s done, it will be a smoother experience for everyone. MCORE leaders released a rendering of what the current phase of the project will look like once it’s completed, scheduled for the end of 2018.
