URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The mayors of Champaign and Urbana are breaking the mold when it comes to staying in touch.
They’re responding to people’s questions and concerns on social media. Most recently, Urbana Mayor Diane Marlin took to Facebook to respond to comments about road conditions.
It all started with a post on a community Facebook page. Someone asked why several roads in Urbana are still in such shabby shape. So both mayors of Champaign and Urbana responded to help people understand whats going on.
Mayor Feinen of Champaign tagged Mayor Marlin in that Cacebook post. So Marlin commented back and said hold on…let me tell you what’s being done to fix it this year. The city will be repairing several of the common areas that need to be fixed. But this is just one example of the way they’re using social media to help people keep up to date with what’s happening in their cities.
“I’m really glad she tagged me in it because the questions were focused on Urbana streets. And in fact a few days ago another friend messaged me and said hey you ought to look in “spotted in chambana” they’re talking about another street. So I was able to provide information on that. So absolutely I think these days if you’re going to be in touch with what people are saying and thinking you’ve got to use social media.”
She says the city is very aware of the repairs that need to be done. It’s just a matter of what will work in the budget, but now they have the money to fix many of the roads. And responding to social media comments about all of this is just one way they’re helping to keep people in the loop on what’s being done about it.
All of the information on the upcoming road repairs can be found on the city’s website. Both mayors said in this day and age they can’t ignore social media. But if you have any questions they say feel free to give them a call and they’ll be happy to answer questions directly.
