CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — For the second time in six months, there’s been a deadly shooting outside the American Legion. The most recent happened Thursday night, just after 9 pm.
48-year old Darin Mitchell died at the hospital after being shot in the stomach. Police are still looking for the shooter.
They spent Thursday night and Friday talking to witnesses, but no one has been arrested yet or named as a suspect.
After being taken to the hospital, Mitchell was rushed into surgery, but he died about 7 am, Friday.
The shooting happened near the American Legion entrance. An argument turned physical, but police are still working to find out what exactly led up to the shooting.
Some witnesses said a big group was hanging out both inside and out when they heard shots. Police say they’re reviewing video footage from the area.
In March, another man died after being shot near the American Legion. Several others were hurt in that shooting. To this day, nobody has been arrested.
In 2007, another man was shot and killed and two others were hurt.
