Man charged w/battery after pistol-whipping victim

TAYLORVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — An area man faces multiple charges after an attack.

Joseph Sparling, 30, is accused of aggravated battery, resisting arrest, possession of a lookalike substance, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police say Sparling pistol-whipped a victim multiple times. It happened about 6:30 pm, Monday, in the 700-block of East Poplar. The victim refused medical treatment.

Multiple law enforcement agencies conducted a search for Sparling after he fled the scene. He was apprehended about two hours later in the 300-block of North Paw Paw Street.

Authorities say, when he was taken into custody, he did not have a firearm in his possession.
