CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — One young man set the American flag on fire, and it’s not the first time.
Bryton Mellott posted pictures of it on Facebook Tuesday night. Mellot says he’s doing this to send a message to government leaders and their supporters: That violence and intimidation will not be tolerated.
This is his way of showing resistance.
If his name sounds familiar, that’s because he did the same thing last year. He was arrested for disturbing the peace, but he was never charged.
Flag burning, while prohibited in Illinois, is protected by the federal government. Mellott filed a federal lawsuit over his arrest from last year. He won the case.
