VERMILION COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Nearly 43 million drivers are heading off to their Memorial Day plans. Experts say this weekend could be the busiest in almost 20 years. The number of travelers is up more than one million compared to just last year.

More than one third of the country will be traveling this weekend. 64 percent will be driving with 25 percent flying. Today is the busiest travel day with 36 percent hitting the roads. With more drivers on the road, you could have delays three times longer. Drivers early Friday said they haven’t experienced any issues yet.

“We usually try to leave before other people get off work, and travel during the daylight too,” said Diana Douglas. “We visited our daughter this weekend last year too.”

We’re right in the middle of what experts believe is one of the worst times to travel this holiday. The other time was Thursday afternoon. The best thing you can do is avoid the morning or evening commute times.

Also, make sure to leave early with plenty of time to make it to your destination. Experts at AAA recommend you have your car checked before you head to your holiday plans. Have a tool kit as well as a first-aid kit in case your car breaks down.
