SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The school resource officer who stopped a gunman from shooting up a state high school was honored Wednesday.

Officer Mark Dallas was recognized at the Statehouse with help from Governor Bruce Rauner. In a speech, he urged lawmakers to add more resource officers to schools to prevent or stop shootings.

Dallas, whose own son was in the Dixon High School Gym at the time of the shooting, May 16, quickly confronted the shooter and prevented multiple deaths.

The accused shooter, 19-year old Matthew Milby, was the only one hurt that day. He has pleaded not guilty to weapons charges.
