Investigation ongoing despite arrests

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Police continue investigating a recent rash of residential burglaries in the southern portion of the city, despite the arrests of two suspects.

During these crimes, car keys and vehicles have been stolen. A vehicle stolen from the 400-block of Evergreen Court West was found in front of a home in the 500-block of East McHenry which had also been burglarized. A vehicle stolen from that neighborhood was found in the 800-block of Oakland Avenue.

Increased patrols in the area and calls from concerned neighbors led to the separate arrests of 19-year old Jerome Ulmer, of Urbana, and a 17-year old Champaign man, about 3:30 pm, Monday.

Ulmer had an outstanding warrant for burglary.

The teen was arrested for residential burglary and motor vehicle theft for the stolen vehicles. Authorities say he was identified because of a phone number dialed when the suspect asked a resident to use the phone, as well as surveillance evidence found as a result of a search of a stolen vehicle.

Residents are urged to call police anytime there is suspected criminal or suspicious activity in their neighborhood.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call Crime Stoppers. Tipsters are always 100% completely anonymous.

All tips submitted to Crime Stoppers are electronically stripped of any personally identifying information and processed by a third-party answering service, not law enforcement.

Cash rewards up to $1,000 are paid for information leading to an arrest. Tipsters will never be asked their name and are given a secret code number to use when checking on a possible reward.
