CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Drivers will soon have to slow their roll on I-74. Starting Friday, IDOT is lowering the speed limit from 70 mph to 60 mph starting west of I-57 to east of Cunningham Avenue.
A recently completed study by the Illinois Department of Transportation shows current prevailing speeds, crash rates and the number of interchanges justified the reduced speed limit.
IDOT routinely reviews all state-maintained routes to determine whether any low-cost safety improvements can be made including speed limits, striping, signal timing and roadside hazards.
Authorities say speed is a significant factor in the severity of crashes including interactions between high-speed traffic on the interstate and slower vehicles entering or exiting interchanges.
The study determined reducing the speed limit of through traffic to that of traffic on interchanges provides more reaction time to drivers which, in turn, can reduce the severity of a crash or avoid one entirely.
