CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Hundreds of kids got a shot to be the best of the best last weekend.
Jefferson Middle School hosted their third annual Illini Archery Invitational. About 700 kids from a dozen schools across the state competed. Kids learn how to shoot as part of the National Archery in the Schools program. The coach says it’s not like most competitive sports.
“Archery is so different from like basketball or football,” says head coach Jason Brown, “We’re competing against 12 different schools today, but it’s almost like they’re family. Even though we’re competing against them, we don’t have that arch rivalry. We’re all kind of a family.”
The overall top shooter from the tournament hailed from the Centennial Chargers archery team. Haylie Denzer shot a 296. That’s also her personal best.
