URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Not everyone is happy about plans for a new development downtown.

It’s been 13-years since the city built new residential facilities and Green Street Realty submitted a letter of intent to build townhomes on Vine Street, next to the city building.

Monday night, there was comment from residents for and against the new townhomes. An alderwoman said two business owners were very happy about it, but a resident was not.

The proposed townhomes will have more than 40 two- and three-story units, up to 1,800 square feet. But, the buildings will be right next to the Urbana Federal Courthouse and other businesses.

The resident was concerned about the aesthetics, whether or not the designs presented would fit the neighborhood and safety issues. He also spoke about the aggressive timeline.

Previously, the mayor said other developers have talked about building in the area, but it’s all been a question about city and developer finances.

The developer will present the plan at 6:30 pm, Tuesday. People are welcome to come and give comments.
