Hospital take-over impacting patients

CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — A medical center changing hands means higher prices for some patients.

In less than 48-hours, OSF will own Presence Medical centers in Danville and Urbana. And, your insurance might not work when it does.

Anyone with Aetna Insurance won’t be covered at Presence, starting Thursday, when the switch happens.

It doesn’t mean you can’t go there, it just means your visits will be “out of network” and cost you more out of pocket. For one man, it means thousands more a year.

Earl Stevens has genetic lung disease, so he has to go to Presence, in Urbana, once a week to stay healthy. His next appointment is Friday, but OSF says his Aetna Insurance will be out of network then.

Stevens asked if and when it would change, but all the company could tell him is they’re working on several insurance agreements and he should keep checking back. Stevens says he’s frustrated and understands things like this take time, but wants everyone to be aware their coverage could change.

Tuesday, Health Alliance and OSF reached an agreement, so patients with that plan will be covered. Negotiations are still happening with Blue Cross. OSF says it’s hopeful they can reach an agreement by Thursday.
