POTOMAC, Ill. (WCIA) — The story of how Our Town got its name is a unique one.

It started as Marysville. Both founders’ wives’ names were Mary, so what better way to show their love than to name the town after them?

But, some thought it was too close to Myersville and it was changed to Potomac. It’s believed the name comes from the Potomac River.

At one point, the population was booming. The town historian says it was before the Chanute Air Force Base, in Rantoul, closed.

Another claim to fame for Potomac is Margaret Harper. She was the first chief of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps.
