CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — A Champaign high school administrator received high praise and honors for his selfless act earlier in the year.

Champaign County Crime Stoppers announced the winner of its fourth annual Dave Benton Crime Fighter of the Year Thursday afternoon. It’s given to a resident of the county who most exemplifies the crimefighting spirit.

Central High School Assistant Principal Brian Yacko took home the award. He was nominated for pulling people to safety and out of the line of fire during a shooing outside the high school in December.

The person who nominated him says Yacko’s actions were nothing short of heroic that night.

The Crime Fighter of the Year Award is named in honor of former WCIA anchor Dave Benton. He was a Crime Stoppers Board member. He passed away after a battle with cancer in 2015.
