Heat advisory forces early dismissals

CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — Extreme heat closed several schools early Monday, but in some places, it will soon be a problem of the past.

Schools in Decatur, Monticello, Chrisman and Champaign called it quits early Monday because of the heat. Many still don’t have central air conditioning, so early dismissal is a safety precaution.

Some schools are moving towards improvements which would make early outs like this a thing of the past.

Central High School, in Champaign, let out a little after 1 pm. Kids say many rooms are cooled by fans. Monday, they say there were so many running in some classrooms, they could barely hear the teachers.

But, luckily for students, updates to Central in the coming years include air conditioning. The renovations should be done by 2022. Again, good news, officials say the air conditioning could come before the project is entirely done.

Though it’s a small part of the renovation, parents say it will be great for morale. Central will release students at 1 pm again Tuesday as will Monticello and Decatur schools.

Adults aren’t immune to the heat either. There are several cooling centers around Central Illinois.
