URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — There was a protest today outside of the Champaign County Courthouse.
The demonstration was for Nickolis Barber. The 15-year-old died a year ago today. Family members believe others may be responsible for his death. The Champaign County state’s attorney tells us barber died from an overdose and there is no case, but that didn’t stop family from protesting and asking to meet with the state’s attorney.
“What if it was your child? What if it was your grandchild? Wouldn’t you want somebody to stand up and be your voice if you couldn’t be heard yourself. So that’s what we’re trying to do. We’re trying to make sure Nick gets justice, gets what he deserves,” Robin Irvin, Nickolis Barber’s mother, said.
The Champaign County State’s Attorney does plan to talk with the family in a meeting next month.
