Governor to give budget preview

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The governor will present his first budget address Wednesday.

He is promised to deliver on another big campaign promise to pass a balanced budget. But as Republican budget negotiators point out–that is no small task. “We are starting with a three plus billion dollar budget hole. There just isn’t a whole lot of money to go around for increases for anybody or anything. That’s got to be the first thing to get solved, because if it isn’t solved, any increase is illusory. It is a check that can’t be cashed,” said Sen. Chapin Rose.

The governor’s budget will likely lean on new tax revenue from legal gambling and marijuana. Democratic Senator Andy Manar says he expects some people may be disappointed after it is all said and done. The budget for state lawmakers is May 31.
