DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — A Danville High School senior is now a self-published author and that is just the start of her story.

“If I love track and field that much and can write a book about it, maybe people who feel the same way can reach out to the book and have a similar experience that I had.”

Not many of us can say we’ve written a book, much less actually published one. But, as a high school senior, Ameia Wilson can say both.

“I always wanted to write a book ever since I was little. I wrote little books and everything.”

Wilson says she really started thinking about it her freshman year.

“I originally wanted it to be an autobiography, but the more I thought about it, I thought, ‘No, that’s boring.'”

Every aspect of the book is really Wilson’s handiwork.

“I put the book together. I formatted it the way I wanted it. I made the cover art.”

Fired Up For Gold follows her time in high school as an athlete and just as a student at Danville High School.

“There’s more to Danville than people think and, I think, by reading the book, people can get a grasp of that.”

The book also tackles some tough issues.

“That’s a big part of my book is failure and the fear of failure where I don’t want to let anyone down. I don’t want to lose, but everyone loses eventually or sometimes.”

Wilson hopes every reader takes a little hope away from the story of her journey.

“You’ll eventually look back on what you’ve been through and, you’re like, I mean, yeah, you had some hard points, but it’s all worth it at the end of the day.”

“Everybody that comes in contact with Ameia kind of leaves with the same impression: That she’s an amazing athlete, but she’s also an amazing person.”

The book’s release date is May 26. It’s already available for pre-order on Amazon, through Barnes & Noble and Google Play Books. Profits go to the high school’s track and field team.

Wilson already signed on to the University of Michigan’s track team. Her dream is to eventually become an ophthalmologist.
