SANGAMON COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — A state lawmaker and former University of Illinois football player was arrested on a DUI charge.

Police found Representative Kam Buckner (D-Chicago) asleep at the wheel. Police say he slept through four cycles of red lights.

The freshman lawmaker has only been in office for about three months. He took over Christian Mitchell’s seat after Mitchell was appointed to deputy governor for JB Pritzker.

Buckner was a defensive lineman at UI from 2003 – 2006.

Buckner refused to take a sobriety test at the scene, but the officer said he smelled of alcohol.
