DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — An organization in Macon County is offering free Uber and Lyft rides to low-income seniors.
The program is run by the Decatur-Macon County Opportunities Corporation. Seniors 65 and older who qualify as low-income can call them to get registered. It’s meant to help seniors who aren’t able to drive themselves to get to doctors appointments or pick up prescriptions at the pharmacy.
From any phone, seniors can call a company called Go-Go-Grandparent to request a ride. Then the company schedules the ride for you through the local Opportunities Corporation. They make sure you get picked up and dropped off safely.
They say this can be a big help for those who need it. Program director Tara Murray says, “Senior transportation has been an unmet need in our community for several years. We used to have some programs that met that need and they’ve slowly kind of gone away over the past several years. The community has been talking about how to fix this, and this is kind of a new and different way to try to do that.”
The program starts February 1, 2019. This was all funded by an anonymous $5,000 grant and will pay for about 350 rides.
The Decatur-Macon County Opportunities Corporation also offers a free group shuttle service for seniors. So if they need to go to the grocery store or run simple errands they can schedule a time for a ride wherever they need. That number is (217) 428-0155.
