CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Taste of C-U food festival kicks off tomorrow and this time around there are more options than ever before.
The event has grown since it started 48 years ago. But this year, they have the most vendors in the event’s history. In the past they’ve averaged about 24 vendors. This year they have 30.
Many of the new vendors are local mom and pop type of restaurants. There are new food trucks ranging from BBQ, Caribbean, Tai, and many others.
It’s free to get in, but ticket prices for food are the same as last year. It’s $1 per ticket and they’re sold in sheets of five. Each ticket can be redeemed at a vendor stand for a food sample.
Champaign Park District’s marketing director Chelsea Norton says, “We have 30 food vendors. Half of them are new to the festival so I think that’s really exciting for people if you’re thinking oh I’ve been to taste and I’ve tasted all these things you probably haven’t because half of them are new to the festival and a lot of them are new to the community which is cool.”
Norton says last year the turnout was about 30,000 people. There’s also a few new activities this year. They’ll have a touch a fire truck event and a graffiti wall for kids to paint.
The festival is at West Side Park. It starts Friday from 5:00-11:00 p.m. and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.
