Five dead in train crash

Pana, Ill. (WCIA) — Five seniors are dead after their car was hit by a train.

It happened just before 7:00 pm, Wednesday, at the intersection of 1800 North Christian County Road and Illinois Route 16.

All five passengers were from Pana and were above the age of 77. They were traveling south when the driver failed to yield and the train hit the driver’s side of the car.

Three people were pronounced dead at the scene, the other two were taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead.

The men killed are 79-year old Herbert Castle, who was the driver, and 89-year old John Castle. The women are 89-year old Mary Castle, 77-year old Nell Castle and 87-year old Mary Pugsley.

A sheriff’s deputy who responded to the scene was the grandson of two of the passengers.

It happened just before 7:00 pm, Wednesday, at the intersection of 1800 North Christian County Road and Illinois Route 16. All five people in the car were from Pana and above the age of 77.

The car was traveling south when the driver failed to yield and the train hit the driver’s side of the car.

Three people were pronounced dead at the scene. The two others were taken to the hospital, where one was later pronounced dead. The final person in the car remains in the hospital in critical condition.

All names will be released once families are notified. Charges are pending from the investigation.
