CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Rantoul volunteer firefighters had their hands full this weekend with four fires in one day.
One fire happened late Saturday night in Penfield. Investigators say the cause was a furnace problem.
The lead fire investigator says fighting three other fires in the same night took a toll on the crew.
“It’s actually pretty rare. Fires kind of go in spurts. We’ll get a bunch and then have none for awhile. But having 4 in one day is kind of rare for us,” said Fire Captain Chad Smith.
Crews had to return to the Penfield house a second time after a hot spot flared up. The home is a total loss and the man who lived there was hospitalized.
