Fight video goes viral, three arrested

Local News

DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — A video of two mothers violently fighting went viral with more than two million views on Facebook.

It happened on East Garfield Avenue under the overpass near the train tracks Saturday morning. Torianna Reed, Shinka Brown and her husband, Kenneth Wells, were arrested. The three are charged with aggravated battery, mob action and endangering the life and health of the children.

Police say there was an incident which led to the fight. Their children go to school together and Brown’s daughter claimed Reed’s son broke her finger. Instead of letting police handle it, the mothers chose to fight it out and it was all caught on video.

Police say the video was taken down, but in just a few days, millions of people saw what happened.

Kenneth Wells recorded the fight showing him encouraging his kids to watch the two women grabbing and punching each other. At one point, Brown bent Reed’s arm backwards. Wells can be heard encouraging her to break Reed’s arm. The video shows Reed biting the back of Brown’s leg to get her to stop.

After a few minutes, the fight ended. Since the clip was posted on social media, police say the video is proof to back up the charges.

Sergeant Steven Carroll says, “The videos are very helpful and sometimes, this one, it was reported just after the fight occurred but it was also seen by a police officer on Facebook. We did a follow-up report to it so we could make the arrest.”

Before the video was taken down, it was shared more than 44,000 times. It also shows at least four kids standing feet away from the fight and mimicking punching and kicking.
