Fatal accident following attempted traffic stop

MACOUPIN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — State police are investigating a single car crash which occurred at Warren Street and Franklin Street in Bunker Hill.

A trooper attempted a traffic stop but the driver fled from the area.

Police terminated the stop at that time.

A short while later, the suspects car was spotted by a Macoupin County Sheriff’s Office Deputy. He attempted to pull over the car as well, but the driver fled at a high rate of speed.    

The suspect was traveling east on Warren Street (Staunton-Bunker Hill Road) at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

Police say the driver left the roadway to the north and struck a tree and caught fire. 

The vehicle was extinguished by the Bunker Hill Fire Department and the driver had to be extricated from the car.

The driver was pronounced deceased on scene by the Macoupin County Coroner. 

The crash is still under investigation by the Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit.
