CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Students at Kenwood Elementary School officially have a new playground.
They attended the unveiling of their Star Playground for a student who died this spring. The entire family of the student was there for the dedication.
Jeffrey Brokish’s wife and three children died in an accident last spring break. His son attended Kenwood and his wife was passionate about helping give the school a new playground.
So, Brokish took money people contributed to his family memorial and used it to finish his wife’s work. Monday, it was officially dedicated to students.
Jeffrey, his parents and his wife’s parents all attended. Jeffrey’s son, Finnegan, would have been in 4th grade this year.
Students honored Finnegan’s memory by presenting thank you cards and carried his name in big letters to the playground. The rest of the students blew bubbles for the ceremony.
The school’s last playground was built in the 1960s. While the playground was just completed, the school was renovated four years ago.
